Calling all group tour planners! Kentucky is teeming with all sorts of student-friendly attractions. With fascinating museums, rich musical heritage, and a storied past full of historical sites and treasures, the Bluegrass State is the perfect destination for student travel.

Where else can you explore the Bluegrass Music Museum and Hall of Fame, learn the history of “America’s sports car” at the National Corvette Museum, discover legends of the track at the Kentucky Derby Museum, and venture underground into the world’s longest-known cave system, Mammoth Cave?

With these exciting attractions and so many more, your students will be amazed by the history, culture, and interactive activities Kentucky has to offer.

Kentucky Derby Museum

In Louisville:

·         Kentucky Derby Museum: Experience the history of Churchill Downs Racetrack, learn how the Kentucky Derby got its start, and see what it takes to be a jockey.

·         Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory: Louisville is home to the baseball bat used in the majors. Experience the full story of Louisville Slugger’s iconic place in America’s favorite pastime through factory tours, the museum gallery, the Bat Vault, and fascinating exhibits.

·         Kentucky Kingdom: Enjoy a full day of rides and attractions while exploring concepts like force, speed, and engineering in action. Students can even download the Education in Motion workbook, featuring projects related to the math, science, and physics behind the park’s rides.

·         The Dot Experience: Opening this year, The Dot Experience seeks to become “the most inclusive museum in the world” through a design that puts access front and center. Explore powerful stories and interactive exhibits that challenge perspectives on blindness and empower social change.

·         Muhammad Ali Center: Discover the legacy of “The Greatest” at the Muhammad Ali Center. See how this larger-than-life figure impacted much more than the world of sports through a collection of immersive exhibits, including “Six Core Principles,” “Train with Ali” and “All Ali, All the Time.


Mammoth Cave National Park

In Bowling Green:

·         Mammoth Cave: Discover the natural and human history of the world’s longest-known cave system and the forest above it. Study unique ecosystems, biodiversity, and historical exploration with educational resources available.

·         National Corvette Museum: Explore the story of “America’s sports car” while learning about automotive engineering, design, and technological innovation through hands-on exhibits.

·       Lost River Cave: Take an underground cave boat tour of Lost River Cave in Bowling Green. This 45-minute tour takes you along the river’s edge before boarding a boat ride through the cave. Along the way, you’ll learn about the cave’s fascinating history as a Civil War campground, Jesse James’ hideout and more. 


In Lexington:

·         Kentucky Horse Park: Delve into equine history at the International Museum of the Horse, participate in horseback riding, meet retired racing champions in the Hall of Champions, and see unique breeds from around the world.

·         Keeneland Tour & Breakfast: Watch thoroughbreds train, eat breakfast at the Track Kitchen, and take a guided, behind-the-scenes tour of the historic Paddock, Grandstand, and stable area.

·         Rail Explorers: Pedal a custom Rail Explorer along scenic, historical railroad tracks, enjoying a unique outdoor journey with the option of electric assist for an effortless adventure.

·         Lexington Opera House: Visit a grand performing arts center, established in 1887, that hosts a variety of events, from opera and ballet to concerts and shows.

·       Camp Nelson National Monument: Explore the grounds of Camp Nelson National Monument to learn more about its role in the Civil War and how this supply depot transformed into a recruitment and training center for United States Colored Troops, as well as a refugee camp for their families and fleeing civilians and enslaved people.

·       Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill: Tour Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, which was once the third-largest Shaker community in the nation. Across this 3,000-acre village, you’ll find 34 original 19th-century Shaker buildings. Stop by The Historic Centre to see artifacts, browse seasonal exhibits and join in daily adventures and programming. Then, learn about sustainable farming and meet the animals at The Farm, or trek 40 miles of trails through the watersheds, woodlands and native prairies in The Preserve.


In Paducah:

·         National Quilt Museum: The National Quilt Museum features a collection of contemporary quilted artwork from around the world. Browse over 650 unique quilts to find out more about this one-of-a-kind artform.


Bluegrass Music Museum and Hall of Fame

In Owensboro:

·     Bluegrass Music Museum and Hall of Fame: Listen to the music of Kentucky as you browse interactive displays, stage costumes, concert posters, instruments, and more at this museum devoted to the state’s storied musical heritage and iconic musicians.


In Hodgenville:

·     Abraham Lincoln Birthplace NHP: Celebrate the legacy of our 16th president at Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park. Tour the original Lincoln Memorial Building, which houses the Symbolic Birth Cabin. Then, head over to Abraham Lincoln’s Boyhood Home at Knob Creek, the rural Central Kentucky setting that shaped the childhood of one of America’s greatest leaders.
