Located deep in the heart of central Texas, Fort Worth is home to a group of unique attractions that can enhance any school group tour.
In early March, the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame debuted the results of a $5.5 million renovation. Two of the main updates were adding the Kit Moncrief Galleries and developing the It’s Never Just a Horse exhibition on the second floor. Tours of the attraction, which is the world’s only museum that’s dedicated to honoring the women of the American West, highlight the efforts of the courageous women and their trailblazing efforts.
Another place that recently received an upgrade is the Fort Worth Zoo. Last April, it opened the African Savanna, which is a mixed-species area that is home to giraffes, black rhinos, hippos and many exotic birds. And the new Stingray Cove opened on March 26. As part of this interactive exhibit, students can touch stingrays and small sharks as the creatures swim through the shallow saltwater pool. Both of the new areas also offer a variety of animal feeding programs.
Fort Worth’s Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is an additional place where groups can get up-close-and-personal with the animal kingdom. Accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, the center an hour south of the city aims to protect animals and help restore the delicate balance between humans, animals and the environment. More than 1,100 animals, including 50-plus species of native and non-native animals, live in the 1,800-acre park. Guided tours on the attraction’s busses or vans are available, or groups can book a step-on guide and follow Gosdin Scenic Drive on their own.
