From its legendary blues history to its thriving theater and comedy scenes, Chicago is a city whose performing arts venues cover a lot of bases. Two organizations that excel at creating memorable experiences—and offering tickets to shows—are Broadway in Chicago and The Second City.
Broadway in Chicago connects student tour groups to the city’s marquee list of live shows, including “Hamilton,” which has been playing to sold-out crowds at the CIBC Theatre since October 2016. The organization manages CIBC and four other theaters in the downtown area, and Executive Director of Sales Gemma Mulvihill can come up with the right show at the right rate for any group of 15 or more.
“The best prices are commonly found on weeknights,” she says, “but each show is different, so it’s always good to check with me for help in booking tickets.”
Broadway in Chicago also offers groups tours of three of its theaters.
The Second City Chicago has three venues all in one location, and its shows, which feature cutting-edge sketch comedy combined with songs and improv, take place seven nights a week.
“Beginning as a small cabaret theater in 1959, The Second City has become a true temple of political satire that boasts 60 years of celebrity alumni, from Steve Carell to Keegan-Michael Key, Stephen Colbert to Tina Fey, and Chris Farley to Bill Murray,” says the organization’s Heather Scholl.
Most of Second City’s shows are Rated R for adult language and content, and aren’t suitable for teenagers. PG-13 shows, which avoid adult language and politics, are offered Saturday afternoons. Travel planners should contact Scholl for details on special “clean” performances. Improv classes and workshops, conducted by actors and coaches, also are available for teens.
