Surrounded by eight interconnected peaks in Newry, Maine, Sunday River is a sprawling alpine resort built for adventure seekers. A popular ski destination, the resort is the home base for visitors who come to discover the surrounding 870 skiable acres as well as 135 trails and glades.
Each of the eight mountain peaks has its own “personality,” making the experiences at every one unique. Visitors can take to the slopes for alpine skiing, snowboarding, and tubing, then hit the trails for Nordic skiing and snowshoeing. On the weekends in December through March, Sunday River offers night skiing, where participants can lap North Peak and South Ridge beneath the lights.
There are also 18 lifts at the resort, according to Communications Director Karolyn Castaldo.
“Our guests will benefit from easier lift access with the installation of Radio-Frequency ID gates at our lifts,” Castaldo says. “This allows guests to load their lift ticket onto an RFID card (which can now be printed from kiosks around the resort) and go direct to the lift.”
She says the Chondola lift, which is set to reopen in the fall, has both open-air chairlift seats and enclosed gondola cabins.
“The lift goes from the South Ridge base area to the top of North Peak, where you can see great views of the Mahoosuc Mountains. There are also hiking trails from the top,” she says.
Other popular fall activities include moose tours, which are led by a resort staffer; canoeing and kayaking on the scenic Androscoggin River; and gem sluicing (similar to panning). A visit to the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum is a must-do; the museum opened last year and features the largest collection of lunar and Martian meteorites in the U.S.
“Each of these activities is suitable for guests of all ages,” Castaldo says.
